Would We Use This Photo If These People Were White?

AP Photo

I look at this AP photo and I find it overwhelming.  At the same time, I think to print the photo makes sense as it is a true reflection of what is going on in Haiti.  That being said, I have a question.

Why is it that we don't hesitate to show such a photo or dead bodies if it takes place in Africa, Asia or Latin America?  Would we be willing to do the same thing if this happened in Boston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis? Would be willing to do it if it were dead American soldiers piled up in Afghanistan?  My guess is no!

I guess I just worry that the double standard that I so frequently find around the world continues with the latest tragedy.  Makes me wonder whether the value of human life is a flexible thing based upon race.

I certainly hope not!
