A reputation is worth everything. Being convicted of the crime of DWI can directly impact that. It will stay on your record and can be found there for years and years. All of a sudden, you can become a convicted criminal. Beyond the title of criminal, being convicted of a DWI can also mean real jail time or even prison. However, it doesn't stop there.
If you have had a previous DWI conviction, the ramifications can get far worse. It isn't just that you could face an enhanced misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor or even felony charges but everything else tied to the case could get worse. In fact, it could get much worse beyond that.
Of course, while we all recognize the importance of a driver's license, a DWI charge could highlight just how important that license is. In fact, you don't even have to be convicted of a DWI to lose your license. Other possible costs include license plate impoundment and even permanent loss of vehicle. This doesn't include insurance cost increases, impacts to job, to travel visas and even more.
Minnesota has decided to not even wait for a DWI criminal conviction before they move to take your driver's license, your vehicle license plates and even your vehicle itself. Now try to figure out how to get to work without the right to drive, let alone have anything to drive.
All of these issues can result in an incredibly complicated process. As a result, the idea of "going it alone" could be far more expensive in the short and long term than hiring an attorney. And the clock usually starts ticking soon after a police officer stops you on the side of the road. So, it may be critical that you make decisions quickly or you may end up waiving certain rights and even losing opportunities to fight the government's efforts to take your license and even your property.
